About Atmosphere

Atmosphere is a hip-hop duo from Minneapolis, MInnesota. The group consists of rapper Slug and DJ/producer Ant. With the exception of a few tracks on the Lucy Ford album, Ant has been the producer for every Atmosphere record. 

Atmosphere got it’s start when Sean Daley (Slug) met Derek Turner while attending Washburn HIgh School. The pair took the names Slug and D-Spawn as their rapper names and performed under the name “Mental Subjects” before changing their name to “A Rhythmic Culture”, then they changed the name to “Urban Atmosphere”. Originally, Spawn performed as the rapper with Slug as the DJ, but Spawn convinced Slug to start rapping as well.

Shortly after this, Slug met up with Ant. Slug saw an opportunity to work with Ant and convinced Spawn to record further with him. They worked with Ant and honed their craft and eventually rebranded as “Atmosphere”. This new band joined a group of other rappers to form the collective known as “Headshots”. And during this period, Atmosphere released their first album, Overcast!. Spawn left the group 3 years later, leaving Slug and Ant to remain as the sole members of Atmosphere.

Atmosphere Today!

Today, Atmosphere has been honored with a star on the outside mural of the Minneapolis nightclub, First Avenue. The stars recognize performers who either contributed to the iconic venue’s culture or played to sold-out crowds. It’s considered the most prestigious honor an artist can receive in Minneapolis, according to some.
